Introduction of Chinese School Association in the United States

The Chinese School Association in the United States (CSAUS) is a (501) (C) (3) not-for-profit organization. The purpose of the Association is to strengthen the cooperation among Chinese schools, promote Chinese language and culture education in the United States, and enhance the cultural cooperation and exchange between China and the United States.

Since its establishment in 1994, CSAUS has grown from the original 5 schools into a large organization with 300 member schools across 42 states. It covers all the major and medium metropolitan areas in the United States. Currently, CSAUS schools have over 60,000 students and 5,000 teachers. In other words, CSAUS has offered services to and exerted impact on tens of thousands of families, as the largest Chinese organization in the United States.

CSAUS board directors and officers, as well as school principals and administrators are volunteers who devote their times and efforts to promote the Chinese language and culture education in the United States. Most Chinese language schools operate on weekends and/or after school hours all year round. Classes are provided to anyone who is interested in Chinese language and cultural arts regardless ethnic and cultural background.  These Chinese schools actively participate in local international cultural events and also serve as family oriented Chinese Community Centers.

Besides its routine work of coordinating and supporting Chinese school operations, CSAUS has conducted many cultural and educational projects. For example, CSAUS has initiated and helped the editing and publication of the Chinese text book “Chinese” by Jinan University that is still the major text book in among Chinese schools; Working with other organizations, CSAUS persuaded College Board to add Chinese AP examination that enabled high schools to offer Chinese AP classes; CSAUS developed and conducted mock SAT II Chinese examinations; CSAUS conducted Art Competition, Chinese composition contest and Chinese cultural knowledge contest; CSAUS organized art performance tours, international culture and art exchanges and root seeking summer camps… These activities have greatly enhanced Chinese language and culture education and enriched the cultural and art life of the Chinese communities.

CSAUS holds its biennial National Conference every other year. Here is a brief history:

  • May 1994, Washington, DC, declaration of establishment of CSAUS
  • October 1995, Columbus, Ohio, 1st National Conference,
  • December 1997, Houston University, 2nd National Conference
  • December 1999, Washington DC, 3rd National Conference
  • December 2002, Chicago, 4th National Conference
  • December 2004, Las Vegas, 5th National Conference
  • December 2006, San Francisco, 6th National Conference

To further promote Chinese language and culture education, CSAUS will hold its 7th National Conference in Newark, NJ, in December 5 - 7, 2008. Over 300 school principals and teachers from the CSAUS member schools along with other Chinese education experts and government officials from the United States and China will attend this conference. This is an excellent opportunity for an industry or business to sponsor Chinese language and culture education in the United States and promote its business among Chinese communities and related people.
